FACING CANCER TOGETHER
Our goal at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) is not just to extend life, but to extend quality of life. In order to do this, LCCC has created the Carolina Well-UNC Lineberger Cancer Survivorship Program, and the UNC-Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Support Program (CCSP). In this section of the website you will find services and support at UNC Chapel Hill. SERVICES AT UNC:

  1. The Carolina Well-UNC Lineberger Cancer Survivorship Program
A cancer survivor is defined as anyone diagnosed with cancer, from the time of diagnosis through the rest of his or her life. Survivorship describes the experience of moving beyond cancer diagnosis and treatment toward wellness.

It is important for you to know there are tools available to help you move beyond the illness and positively impact the quality of your life. It is also important to take care of yourself, to make follow-up appointments with your health care provider and make sure you let them know of any physical or emotional things that may be bothering you, including things that get in the way of your daily life and well-being. Survivorship programs and clinics can help you and your family address these concerns and help you feel better-in body and mind.

Survivorship Clinic Visits and Survivorship Care Plans and are tools to help create an easier transition to life after cancer for both you and your primary care provider. They will help you:
    • Address any physical and emotional concerns you have following cancer treatment
    • Understand the treatment you received and it's potential side effects
    • Recommendations for follow-up care, also know as surveillance, such as check ups with your doctor, tests, and what to expect
    • Develop a personalized action plan for healthy living
    • Get other referrals as needed, for example: symptom management or medication clinics, nutrition consult, etc.
    • Transition back to your community health care provider by providing a concise summary of your cancer treatment and a survivorship care plan for you and your primary care provider
Call 919-966-3494 to schedule a survivorship consult or appointment for the following clinics: General Transitions Survivorship Clinic, Breast Survivorship Clinic, Testicular Survivorship Clinic, and the Bone Marrow Transplant Long Term Follow-Up Clinic.

    Schedule of Classes and Presentations:
Attend one of our Transitions sessions- a six week group program for cancer survivors that offers education, support and expert panelists on medical issues, exercise, nutrition and emotional needs that survivors may face after treatment and a host of other classes and groups designed for you and your loved ones.
  2. The Comprehensive Cancer Support Program is a multidisciplinary program dedicated to helping patients and their caregivers with cancer treatment, recovery and survivorship. Multidisciplinary means we bring together experts from different professions and areas of expertise to bring you the help you need. This team of experts comes together to help you - taking into account your personal diagnosis, individual needs and unique situation - to provide compassionate and meaningful support for you and your loved ones during the cancer journey. The CCSP serves as the umbrella organization for UNC cancer support programs: educational and counseling services, symptom management clinics, integrative medicine, support groups, and Carolina Well, the UNC-Lineberger Survivorship Program. CCSP operates its educational, clinical and research programs at two sites in Chapel Hill: the North Carolina Cancer Hospital and Carolina Pointe II. To contact or learn more about the CCSP, call 919-966-3494; email at ccsp@med.unc.edu; or visit our site.
  3. Peer Connect: A Peer to Peer Support Program
Carolina Well and Cornucopia House Cancer Support Center are offering a peer support program that connects anyone touched by cancer with another person whose experiences with cancer are similar. Peer Connect was developed to assist participants in a unique and personal way by matching them with someone who has already gone through and recovered from a similar cancer experience.

This program is open to anyone touched by any type of cancer — the newly diagnosed, patients in active treatment, survivors, family members, close friends, and caregivers — anyone who needs the support of others who share similar experiences.

If you are interested in receiving peer support or becoming a volunteer for this program please visit the Connecting with Other Survivors page of our website or email chpeer@mindspring.com or call (919) 401-9333.
  4. Get REAL & HEEL
An After Care Breast Cancer Program

Get REAL & HEEL is a unique program designed to serve breast cancer patients in North Carolina. Get REAL & HEEL is not just an exercise program. It integrates individualized prescriptive exercise with recreational therapy to provide a program that strengthens your body and mind. We develop an individualized plan that helps each participant manage cancer treatment-related symptoms and increase chances of survivorship and quality of life. Because of grant support, this program is currently provided to individuals free of charge. Please visit Get REAL & HEEL or contact Dr. Diane Groff, Program Co-Director at 919-962-0534, groff@email.unc.edu
  5. Sole Sisters
Sole Sisters is a free, 14-week program designed to help sedentary women initiate and maintain a regular exercise program. This program was founded by Judith Swasey, RN, MSN, ANP-C, Clinical Instructor and UNC Breast Center nurse practitioner. The program is sponsored by UNC Lineberger to provide education, motivation and support to enable women to begin a moderate to vigorous exercise program. The program also works to modify common obstacles for women beginning an exercise program, promote maintenance of a life-long exercise program and raise awareness for breast cancer prevention, screening and research. Participants must register for the orientation. Registration for orientation is limited to the first 100 women. To register, call (919) 966-5905.
