Coping & Support

Coping Support

Coping with a diagnosis of cancer can be one of the most difficult life challenges that individuals face. This challenge includes the psychological, emotional, social, physical, and spiritual dimensions relating to initial cancer diagnosis, treatment/post-treatment issues, recurrence, and survivorship. As human beings, no two people react exactly the same way to anything, especially cancer. Yet, nearly all survivors need support to cope with the emotional and practical everyday-living aspects of their disease diagnosis and treatment.

You are the expert on yourself and your needs. Your lifestyle, your relationships, your beliefs about healing, and your attitudes about medical and complementary care will guide you in choosing what works for you.

Don't be afraid to ask for help. Many people find it helpful to talk with counselors and social workers at UNC who are available to all patients and families.
  • The Comprehensive Cancer Support Program (CCSP)
    • The Psycho-Oncology Clinical Service of CCSP provides psychosocial support and psychiatric consultation for both inpatients and outpatients; individual, couples, family, and group psychotherapy; and management of depression, anxiety, cognitive impairment, and other symptoms associated with cancer and its treatment.
